Reformation Sunday Sermon
The life of John Calvin
I meant to post this sermon link on the 1st of November, which was reformation Sunday, at least in our Church. I believe it is important for us to be thankful for the heritage we have as evangelicals, and it is refreshing to take a break from the norm and reflect on the work of God in history. We spent the service learning about the life and ministry of John Calvin, thanks to one of our resident preachers who is also a reformation history expert...
Few men of reformation times are as much maligned as John Calvin. His name is commonly attached to the system of theology known as "Calvinism", yet confessional Calvinism has been systematized beyond anything you are likely to find in Calvin's writings - however his name is still the catch phrase of modern Westminster theology. Personally, I think its unfair that Calvin's name has become the "dirty word" of reformed theology when his doctrine of election wasn't really any different than all the other theological greats of their time. Maybe someone can explain to me how this all came about!
